Quilt Group Show & Tell, FREE Bag Pattern & Bobbin Necklace

These are recent Show & Tell pictures from the Dhahran Oasis Quilt Guild here in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

This above was Kim's first pieced quilt top.  I think she did a great job.  She was so proud of her work.

Julie, the President of the Quilt Guild made this nice quilt for her son.  It has a Texas theme.  She used I think she said 20 charms and did large sashing to make the charms go further.  I think the quilt turned out great.  She did a diagonal zigzag curve type of quilting.

 Close up of the front.

This is the back.  The Texas border is cute.  I think she used flannel for the backing.

LARGE CARRY ALL BAG WITH FREE PATTERN LINK

2 ladies in the Quilt Guild made these awesome carry all bags from a FREE pattern.  This was their Show & Tell.  It took them 4-6 hours to make them.  The bags are huge and carry lots of stuff, would be great to carry all your Show & Tell stuff to your Quilt Meetings.  Would also be great to carry all your towels & such to the beach.

The great thing about this bag, besides the pattern being FREE, is that is uses 6 Fat Quarters all being different!  So each side looks totally different.

This is the other side.  See how it has different fabrics?  Like this bag but want to know where to get the FREE Pattern?  Go to the Publisher Martingale at http://www.shopmartingale.com/.  Go to the FREEBIES tab at the top.  On that page you can register for a free signup of their newsletter.  Then you can download any of their FREE patterns.

The lady in the beige shirt in the picture above had this fun necklace on and I wanted to take a picture of it to share with yall.  She said you can take a regular metal bobbin, have it gold or silver plated, then attached a pendant bail.  How simple is that!?

MORE SHOW & TELL PICTURES

This was from a Free Motion Workshop

Close Up of the Free Motion Quilting

Those new to Free Motion Quilting were looking at the board then scribbling on paper to get the feeling for the stitches.

One lady's Free Motion Quilting practice sandwich

2 ladies finished their very first quilt tops, then sandwiched then & pinned them.

One lady finished this block.  I like the colors.

Neat, Tidy & CLEAR Bobbin Storage (Tutorial)

I came across a blog post and just had to share with yall.  It's like, so ingenious!  Right now I have tiny colored ponytail holders on my bobbins, which I'm not completely happy with but needed something to wrap around my bobbins to keep the thread ends from running loose on me.  The threads still have a way of coming out from underneath.  My old bobbin storage system ended up looking like a rat's nest, sorry no picture of the nest.

Julie @ Stars & Sunshine blog shows how to organize your bobbins as well and keep them all wrapped up.  And you can clearly see what color is on the bobbin!  Click the image to get the tutorial & see her organizing system.

My New Digital Camera

About a month ago I received a new camera from my Brother-in-Law.  I've been taking pictures out the wazoo!  Well I decided it was time to show yall my new baby!

MY OTHER CANON DIGITAL CAMERA WITH VIDEO THAT IS LIKE 2 YEARS OLD
Works great, takes great pictures and great video with sound.  I never had any problems with it.

MY NEW CANON DIGITAL SLR CAMERA.  IT'S A CANON EOS 5OOD.  GREAT UPGRADE FOR ME AND I WAS SO EXCITED TO GET IT!  I've been wanting a new fancier camera for a while now, just never said anything to anyone.  It's got some accessories, a small shoulder bag and a large backpack with accessory dividers inside.

Hud Hud "Hood Hood" Bird in Saudi Arabia

I think these are very cool looking birds.  They are about the size of an American Cardinal and peck the ground like WoodPeckers.  When they get into a fight with another bird or want to scare off another bird, they puff up their Crown as shown below in the 3rd picture.  They are very common here in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia but not sure about the rest of Saudi.  I don't even know if they are found in other countries.

These pictures are from the internet as I wasn't able to get great pictures of birds in person without them flying off!

Cool looking Soft Drink cans in Arabic

If you remember, I am in Saudi Arabia visiting my twin.  Here, they have many of the same products that we have back in the US but with a different look.  Since my first day here on March 13th I thought the soft drink cans were very cool looking.  I have been taking LOTS of pictures but haven't really posted as I am waiting until I return back to the US to post most of them, being that I may have more pictures to add to each blog post.

These are a few of the Sodas.  Here in Saudi they call them Soft Drinks.  Back in the US I personally call them Sodas but I know they are known by Sodas, Soft Drinks or Pop.  The bottom picture has the Arabic side when turned around.  Some of the Diet Soft Drinks are referred to as "Light" instead of "Diet".

Rainbow Fat Quarter Swap 2

WELCOME TO OUR 2ND ROUND OF SWAPPING!
This is a great way to build up your fabric stash with lots of color!

PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST CAREFULLY!  :)

To avoid each participant from buying alot of fabric, I will limit each swap group to 12 participants, which is how many colors are in the color wheel.  This means that each participant will have to buy only 3 yards of fabric.  If I get alot of interest to participate, there will be more groups.  But I will need the total number of participants to be divisible by 12 to create additional groups.  Participants will be grouped together in the order they sign up.  DEADLINE TO SIGN UP IS JUNE 9TH.  I WILL ASSIGN COLORS BY THE 11TH.  PARTICIPANTS MUST BE IN THE USA OR CANADA ONLY.

DETAILS OF SWAP:

  • For the Rainbow Swaps, I might use the idea from the blog FROM THE BLUE CHAIR in that she is doing 4 swaps per round (1st being bright colors, 2nd being pastels, 3rd being jewel tones with black mixed in, 4th being solids).  I might plan on adding a 5th round of light colors that are not pastel.
  • Those who signed up for this first round will have priority in signing up for subsequent Rainbow rounds as long as they were good swappers, shipped on time and followed all guidelines.
  • Quilt-shop-quality fabric only--please no Jo-Ann's, Walmart, etc.
  • I'll assign each person in a group a different color.  You need to purchase the fabric in your assigned color.  We are swapping print fabrics only this round.  The fabric must "read" the assigned color, but does not have to be entirely that color.  Large-scale prints may not be appropriate as they will be too big.  Keep this in mind when choosing fabrics.  The image below is from The Blue Chair blog and will give you an idea of which fabrics are good for this swap.

  • There are 12 participant slots for each group--everyone sends 12 Fat Quarters and I'll send you 12 Fat Quarters from other swappers.
  • This round will be for Jewel Tones Colored Prints.  All color assignments will be based on the color wheel below.  Jewel Tones means that the fabric must include the assigned color, maybe a 2nd color matching the assigned color, some black highlights and maybe some white or cream if you choose but no "color" that doesn't match the assigned color (i.e. red being the assigned color and you see a fabric that has yellow in it).  IF YOU HONESTLY CAN'T FIND A FABRIC LIKE THIS FOR YOUR ASSIGNED COLOR, JUST GET A BRIGHTLY COLORED FABRIC IN YOUR ASSIGNED COLOR BUT THE FABRIC CAN'T HAVE MORE THAN 1 OR 2 ADDITIONAL MATCHING COLORS IN THE SAME COLOR FAMILY PLUS MAYBE A CREAM OR WHITE LIKE IN THE IMAGE ABOVE.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  You can always send me a link to an online fabric image and I will let you know if it's right or not.

  • Fabric must be New, Unwashed & come from a Smoke Free environment.
  • All fabric must be in my hands no later than June 21st, 2012 (although the sooner the better).  I will return the Fat Quarter packs as soon as all are received.  I hope to have the packages back to you within a week or 2 of the 21st.
  • When mailing your fabric, you must include a Pre-Paid Priority Mail Envelope.  If you do not send the pre-paid envelope, I can't send your Fat Quarters back.  Place your fabric in a heavy Ziploc or other plastic bag.  Include a 3x5 index card or any size piece of paper listing your name, address & email address so I can let you know I received your fabric.  Just fold your pre-paid envelope in half & insert.  Having everything pre-paid will make things so much easier and quicker for me.
  • If you would like, take a permanent marker and write a short note on the outside of your Ziploc bag for the recipient and include your first name.  You could write something like, "Happy Swapping!  @pril"
  • If you choose to order your fabric online, you can have the fabric shipped directly to me.  I will cut it for you, since Fat Quarters are easier to cut than Charms.  This will avoid you having to pay shipping twice (i.e. fabric shop sends fabric to you to cut, you send fabric to me for swap).
  • For this round and all future rounds I am accepting PayPal only for those not shipping a pre-paid Priority Mail Envelope to me.  US Participants will send $6.15 & CANADIAN Participants will have to send me $13.15 via PayPal.  This will pay to have your final package shipped back to you via USPS Priority Mail.  For those in the US, please choose the "Gift Option" before sending.  Click on "Send Money" then on the next screen, click on "Personal" located at the middle of the screen next to "Purchase".  You can just leave it set as "Gift".  Canadian PayPal may have the exact same setup, not sure.
  • 3 yards of Quilt fabric weighs roughly 1 lb.  First Class Mail only goes up to 13 ounces.  Which is why USPS Priority Mail is best for this swap.
  • Let me know if you want to have fabric shipped to me and I will give you my home address.
  • How to easily cut a Fat Quarter, if you don't already know how:  You know where the crease is down the middle just like how it comes off the bolt?  You are going to re-iron that.  Open up your 3 yard piece of fabric.  Make sure the selvedges match up well.  Selvedges are the perfect sides that have the writing with the color dots & designer info.  Re-iron the crease down the middle, lining up the selvedges.  Cut on that ironed line.  You will have 2 long pieces.  Cut each piece into (3) 1 yard pieces.  Then cut each yard in half.  Voila!  You have 12 Fat Quarters.
  • Please only sign up if you are pretty sure that you can follow through with the swap.  I do realize that things come up in our lives, no biggie.  You won't get scolded or get your hands wacked with a ruler!  Those last signups that don't quite make a group of 12 will get bumped up into groups in the case that someone has to drop out & will be notified.

WHO'S READY TO SWAP?!
